Diamonds are forever and for April

11 04 2009

This is the month of Diamonds.

Diamondstsolrgrd1-22014yg20g-h20i1-2t are sought after for their natural brilliance and irresistible shine. They’re the hardest substance known, which can withstand the roughest of treatments. Those qualities combined make them the symbol of everlasting and timeless love…

A diamond is made of 99.95% crystallized carbon in its purest form. The Earth makes these precious diamonds deep within its core by combining gases, liquids and crystals to form them in their roughest state.

The world’s primary source of diamonds is South Africa followed by the Soviet Union, Angola, Zaire, Sierra Leone.

March Birthstone is Aquamarine

17 03 2009

tkm20091aqb-2tCeline is our jewelry adiser blogger. She is just the best and knows everything about jewelry and what is inb now. March birthstone is her favorite, aquamarine. It’s a glorious stone .  It is a great look for March and would make perfect gifts for your perfect occasion.

Aquamarine, named for the Latin phrase “water of the sea”, is a blue to blue-green variety of the mineral beryl. Beryl also contains other gem varieties, including emerald and some lesser known varieties (such as morganite and heliodor). Light green beryl can be transformed into aquamarine if heated to 750º F (400º C). The green hues in regular aquamarine can also be removed through heating. Most aquamarine gems on the market today are heat-treated.

Aquamarine is a not an uncommon gem, and is thus affordable.

Gemstones: The Oscar of Colors

9 03 2009

adamstko50114snmain-2t3Amy Adams covered the three precious colored gemstones bases in a Fred Leighton vintage 1950s bib style necklace. Different sizes of the colored gemstones, with diamond thrown in, were connected in spider web formation. This necklace was so ornate; no other jewelry was needed or worn.

The necklace was paired with a red dress. Red and green are complimentary colors, however there was so much going on with the dress and the necklace that the overall affect was disharmonious. There was no real focal point to the outfit, which is needed when pairing colors so the eye darted about. Not a good combo.

Jewelry and Flowers for Valentine’s

4 01 2009

th0206022014k20tricolor20g-h20si3-1Although Valentine’s Day has been observed since around the late 1300′s, it didn’t really take off as a time to send words of love and flowers to your beloved until the Victorian period.

It was considered improper for a woman and her male suitor to exchange notes or even glances that could be considered too affectionate and so the language of flowers was born. There was a meaning assigned to every flower and a woman’s love might make her bouquet with aster flowers meaning he was in love with her, baby’s breath flowers meaning his love was everlasting and daffodils to tell his lady love that he also had great admiration and respect for her.

Along with this “secret” language came the tradition of once a year exchanging valentines that were handmade and hand written. In 1947 Esther Holland began making and selling handmade lace-covered Valentines that became the rage and the tradition of buying valentine greetings continues to this day.

A great sentiment to include with your valentine is a gift of a heart shaped pendant. A beautifully cut diamond will send a great message for Valentine’s Day and you can sweeten the deal with a bouquet of red roses that means, “I love you”.
